Digital reconstruction of the Seligenstadt synagogue

 german version

Remembrance. Understand. Preserve.

There is evidence of Jewish life in Seligenstadt dating back many centuries. The first documented mention of a Jewish community dates from 1293. In the 19th century, following the granting of legal equality to Jews, the community experienced a new heyday and had around 280 members in 1885.

Between 1870 and 1872, the Jewish community built a new synagogue on the corner of Frankfurter Straße and Grabenstraße, which was officially inaugurated on 1 March 1872.
This synagogue was not only a religious but also a cultural hub of urban life.
With the Holocaust in the 20th century, this Jewish life came to a cruel end – the synagogue was set on fire on 10 November 1938 during the pogrom and was later completely demolished.

Remembrance through digital reconstruction

Through this project, the Association „Förderkreis Historisches Seligenstadt“ aims to preserve and document the memory of the Jewish community that once existed in Seligenstadt.

To make history visible and tangible, particularly for young people, the synagogue has been digitally reconstructed.

The digital reconstruction provides a striking illustration of how the building once blended into the cityscape. It is based on the few surviving photographs, archaeological excavation reports from the local heritage authority, as well as historical documents and publications.
